Bennington Town Clerk

General Information

On February 8th, the Bennington Town Board accepted Judy Brown's resignation from the Clerk/Collector position and appointed Joanne Rosenthal as Town Clerk/Collector for the balance of 2023.  Mrs. Rosenthal has been receiving training from Mrs. Brown as well as Deputy Clerk Dee Nikiel and the County Treasurer's Office.  Mrs. Brown will continue to serve as Deputy Clerk/Collector through the end of the tax collection period. 

 

The Town Clerk's office provides issuance of various licenses and permits, recording various documents and vital statistics, as well as collecting fees and taxes required from town residents. Joanne can be reached by phone at 585-591-2157 during office hours. Calls received outside these times will be directed to a voicemail and are returned during office hours. The Town Clerk accepts cash, check, money orders and credit cards. Transaction fees for credit cards may be found here. A $20 fee will be assessed for returned checks. All checks should be made payable to "Bennington Town Clerk". 


IMPORTANT:  This is NOT the COURT CLERK'S OFFICE.  DO NOT CALL OR CONTACT THE TOWN CLERK REGARDING TRAFFIC TICKETS OR COURT CASES.  VISIT THE COURT PAGE FOR CONTACT INFO FOR THE COURT CLERK.   DO NOT STOP AT THE HALL DURING TOWN CLERK HOURS TO DROP OFF OR ASK COURT RELATED QUESTIONS.  

 

Office Hours

The Town Clerk is available Monday and Wednesday from 5:00 p.m until 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.  Additional hours by appointment.

Notary Services are available by appointment or by chance during regular office hours.
Licensing Services
  • Dog Licenses - All dogs 4 months of age or older must be licensed in the Town where they reside. A current copy of rabies vaccination is required to license your dog. This license will be valid for one year and will need to be updated every year. Fees are $9 for altered (spayed/neutered) and $18 for intact dogs.  

  • Hunting & Fishing Licenses - Photo ID Required. Payment by cash, check or credit card.  

  • Marriage Licenses - Both parties must be present at the time of application. Original birth certificates (with seal) as well as a drivers license or passport are required for identification purposes.  Divorced applicants must bring dated divorce papers.  The cost is $40, made payable to the Bennington Town Clerk.  A marriage ceremony cannot occur until 24 hours after license issuance and the license is valid for up to 60 days.    Appointments to obtain a marriage license can be made by either emailing the Clerk at benn-clerk@rochester.rr. com or calling 585-591-2157.  Please download and bring a completed Marriage Application Worksheet it with you.

Parking Permits for Persons with Disability

The Town Clerk issues the permit after your physician has filled out the required paperwork.  Valid photo ID is required.  There is no fee for the permit.

E-ZPass On-The-Go

You can now purchase E-ZPass On-The-Go at the Clerk's Office.  With the Pass, you receive discounted NY (and many other states) tolls quickly and easily.  You purchase the tag for $25 at the Town Hall, register the tag numbers on-line or by phone and include your vehicle information (can include up to 4 passenger vehicles), mount the tag on your vehicle (velcro strips are included) and you are ready to go.  Your initial $25 purchase price will be credited to your new account toward your initial tolls.  Enroll your credit card information and the account will be automatically replenished when it gets low, or you can mail in a check to E-ZPass.  They make great gifts, too!  Call or stop in to talk to the Clerk if you have any questions.  

Genealogy Requests:
  • Birth certificates - if on file for at least 75 years and the person whose name is on the birth certificate is known to be deceased.

  • Death certificates - if on file for at least 50 years.

  • Marriage certificates - if on file for at least 50 years and both spouses are known to be deceased.

 

The time periods are waived for direct-line descendants. A direct line descendant is a person in the direct line of descent, i.e., the child, grandchild, great grandchild of the person whose record is requested. The direct-line descendant applicant must provide the following:

  • Proof of their relationship to the person whose record they are requesting.

  • Proof of the death of the person whose birth certificate they are requesting.

  • Proof of the death of both spouses whose marriage certificate they are requesting
